Thoughts Going Forward

With the base concept for our font laid out, we want to develop it going forward in a way the better encapsulated the feel of Athena at Night. We think that this could be done through a couple different ways. These ways include adding greater detail and consistency within the font similar to the art style of the book itself as well as changing the scaling of some parts of the letters, in particular, the O and M seem out of place with their squished appearance; not something you would see made out of pipes.

We wish for the detail within the font to be greater as it would create an interesting and vibrant feel to the title to better capture the reader’s attention. Small details such as valves on some of the pipe connectors and threading on each bare end of a pipe would help bring that feeling to life. The documentary “Helvetica” by Gary Hustwit discusses the importance of white space in addition to the type itself, and taking this into consideration, the amount of space needed between each letter is something we plan to add to our draft.

The scaling on some of the letters gave them a feel inconsistent with the rest of the type. The most noticeable from our original draft are the O and M along with the bottom of the L and the curve in the C. These letters will most likely become stretched to even out the feeling of compression. We believe that this consistency will help the readability of the font tremendously, something important for the very young readers this book is intended for will most likely need.
